Evidence-Based, Gold-Standard Assessment & Report
Collaboration with Unions, Training Providers, and Employers
TPC is a participating provider in the ARISE (Apprentice Readiness Inventory Skills Evaluation) Program, funded by the Government of Ontario and coordinated by the Ontario Psychological Association to support psychoeducational assessments for aspiring skilled trades apprentices across Ontario.
We provide comprehensive psychoeducational assessments for individuals entering or progressing within skilled trade apprenticeships and licensing pathways.
The PsychoEd clinic focuses on the intersection of learning, attention, and the real-world demands of skilled trades. This includes the use of gold-standard psychoeducational assessments to understand how reading, writing, math, processing speed, and executive functioning affect trade school coursework, technical theory, and written exams.
We translate assessment findings into recommendations that are workable in apprenticeship training environments, safety-sensitive workplaces, and licensing exams. TPC also coordinate with unions, training providers, and employers so that accommodations are realistic, clearly communicated, and aligned with program expectations and safety standards.
All assessments are completed by clinicians with specialized experience in psychoeducational assessment and learning disorders, including ADHD.
The Psychoeducational Assessment for Trades and Licensing is a coordinated process that integrates comprehensive psychological evaluation with the practical needs of apprenticeship and certification pathways. For ARISE participants, referrals are coordinated through the Ontario Psychological Association’s AskForHelpToday.ca platform. For other unions, training providers, employers, and institutional partners, and for those with insurance coverage, direct referrals can be submitted through our clinic’s referral tool.
Each assessment includes a structured clinical interview, review of educational and work history, and standardized testing of cognitive, academic, and related skills. The psychologist then integrates all findings into a comprehensive report that may include diagnoses and provides clear, practical recommendations for accommodations in trade school, on-the-job training, and licensing or certification exams.
Our psychoeducational assessments are designed for:
Skilled trade apprenticeship candidates
Workers preparing for licensing or certification exams
Trades trainees experiencing academic or exam-related challenges
Institutional partners (unions, employers, training providers, and government-funded programs) seeking high-quality evaluations
For ARISE participants, the fee per assessment is $3,500.
For non-ARISE clients, the fee per assessment is $4,500.

This service is for skilled trade apprenticeship candidates, workers preparing for licensing or certification exams, and trades trainees experiencing academic or exam-related challenges. It is also for unions, training providers, employers, and government-funded programs seeking high-quality psychoeducational assessments for their candidates.
How do referrals work for ARISE vs non-ARISE cases?
ARISE-funded assessments must be referred by the ARISE caseworker through OPA’s AskForHelpToday.ca platform. All other referrals, including candidates with insurance coverage or other funding, are made directly to our clinic using the online Referral Tool.
What does the psychoeducational assessment involve?
The assessment typically includes a structured clinical interview, a review of educational and work history, and gold-standard testing of cognitive, academic, and related skills (such as attention and executive functioning). The psychologist then prepares a comprehensive report that may include diagnoses and provides specific recommendations for trade school, workplace, and licensing or certification accommodations.
Do many trades candidates need psychoeducational assessments?
Many individuals entering the skilled trades have long-standing learning or attention challenges that have never been assessed, or were assessed only in childhood without an updated evaluation.
Common reasons for referral include:
Difficulties with technical theory courses or written trade school examinations
Challenges with reading, written expression, math, or understanding complex written instructions
Longstanding issues with attention, organization, time management, or memory in classroom and workplace settings
Concerns about meeting the academic and cognitive demands of apprenticeship or licensing despite strong hands-on skills
What will the institution, union, or employer receive?
With the client’s consent, the referring institution, union, or employer receives a clear, professionally written report and recommendations focused on training, workplace, and licensing contexts. Recommendations are designed to be realistic, implementable, and aligned with program expectations and safety standards.
What is the cost of the assessment?
For ARISE participants, the fee for each assessment is $3,500, paid directly to the psychologist or psychological associate by the ARISE caseworker according to program guidelines.
For non-ARISE institutional referrals, the standard fee for a comprehensive psychoeducational assessment for trades and licensing is $4,500 per assessment.
